I have finished my returns and e-filed my federal. TurboTax says I can't e-file my state because of a solar credit. I didn't claim any solar credit. What do I do?

I have gone back and checked but there is no credit applied in the household section.  How can I correct this?

Can you clarify which state you are filing?

Sorry, I meant to type NY state in stead of "my".

Did you claim the solar credit in prior year and  had an amount carried over to this year?

For IT-255 calculate the credit and the amount of credit available for carryover.

If that does not apply to you, follow the steps to delete the form:

  1. Click on Tax Tools on the left-hand side.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click on Delete a Form.
  4. Delete Form IT-255 and the IT-255 credit worksheet

For TurboTax CD/download:

  1. Switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon
  2. From the menu, select the form you want to remove
  3. After the form is generated in the right pane, select the Delete Form button
  4. Follow any onscreen instructions to remove the form or forms

To get to "tools" I had to go to "add a state".. There is no IT-255 form listed for me in fed or state. What's next?

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax token.  The token provides a sanitized version of your return.  We will be able to see the numbers but not any personal information such as your name, SSN, or address.

If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

In TurboTax Online, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen, and you will get a Token number.

In TurboTax CD/Download versions, go to the black panel on your screen and select Online.

  1. Scroll down and select Send tax file to Agent.
  2. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click send through this screen, and you will get a Token number.

Reply to this thread with your Token number.

We will then be able to see precisely what you are seeing, and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

I don't have "tax tools" as a choice in the black area on the left. All I have on the left is: Tax Home, Documents, CK, Intuit Account, Switch to Sp, and Sign Out.  Let me just say I e-filed my fed return and only printed my state return. I have not mailed my NYS return. Do I now need to amend my return or is there a way to change my NYS return?

The token shows a solar credit carry-over listed as zero entered into the return.  If this was entered in as an error, you could follow these steps in TurboTax Desktop to remove the entry and electronically file your return:

  1. Click Forms in the Upper right-hand corner
  2. Scroll Down to NY Individual Return and Click on Tax/Credit Worksheet
  3. Scroll down to line 26, Wind and Solar Credit Carryover, and delete the entry

@BrittanyS  So yes a zero was entered in error (should have left blank..)  1. I don't have "Forms" in the right hand (or any) corner. Do I need to go to "Amend return" to find it?

@BrittanyS I think I'm missing something here. Do I need to amend my return to do this?

If the selection was made to mail your return, and you have not already mailed the return, you will just need to switch back to e-file to make the change in TurboTax.

To switch to e-file, follow these steps:

  1. In TurboTax Online, sign into your account.
  2. Select Tax Home in the left menu.
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  4. Select 2022, then select Add a State (you're not adding a state, this gets you into the correct area).
  5. Select File in the left menu (expand your browser window if you don't see this, or select the menu icon in the top left corner).
  6. On the Just one more step screen, follow steps 1 and 2 if you haven't already.
  7. Select the Start button to the right of Step 3.
  8. On the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select I want to e-file.
  9. From here, you can go back into the state return and make the change to remove the $0 listed for the solar credit.
