I cannot find any way to get to a TurboTax Chat Room
I recently filed my2019 taxes using the TurboTax Premier system. Last year (tax year 2018, filed in early 2019) was my first with TurboTax. Last year, my Fed and State returns were calculated using itemized deductions. This year, at about half way through my Federal tax data input, a screen popped up saying that the “standard deduction” would be better for me, but I nevertheless finished doing the itemized deductions, then I went as the program suggested.
Almost all of my input data for this year, was very, very close to last year’s input. My Federal refund for this year was very much the same as last year, but my North Carolina State refund this year was significantly less than last year. In comparing the two years’ returns, I believe that the reason for the difference was that while the standard deduction was to my benefit for Fed, the itemized would have been better for the State.
Could I, or should I have done the Fed return using the standard deduction, and then doing the State return using the Itemized deduction ? Is there a way for me to be able to check to see if I am correct?
I really don’t think that I should have to upgrade to a more expensive edition just to solve this problem.
