How do I enter Virginia529 or Prepaid Tuition Plan details

I am selecting both of these checkboxes. The second checkbox because I have been making contributions to the 529 plan since 2017 and every year the contribution has exceeded $4000.

  • I made a payment or contribution in 2024
  • I have a payment or contribution to carry over from 2023

On the next screen, it asks me for '2024 Contribution' and 'Prior Year Contributions Not Deducted'. How do I find out Prior Year Contributions Not Deducted? Would this involve adding the total contribution amount from 2017 to 2023 and subtracting the total amount that has been deducted for the tax years 2017 to 2023?

Q. Can you please confirm if I should enter the following amounts for 2024 taxes?

  • 2024 Contribution = $6000
  • Prior Year Contributions Not Deducted = $20,000 (This is because $28,000 has already been deducted from 2017 through 2023 and the remaining amount is $20,000 from prior years)

A. Yes, confirmed.  If you use TT next year, it should carry forward the $22,000 (20,000 + 2000).

Yes.  How much you can deduct depends on your age, how much you paid toward a prepaid tuition contract or contributed to a savings account this year, and if your payments to these accounts in a prior year were more than the maximum deduction allowed.

If the owner of the account is at least 70 years old this year, every dollar paid in a prior year that wasn't deductible in that year because of a maximum limit and every dollar paid this year is deductible. There is no limit.

If you're under 70 years old this year you can deduct up to $4,000 for each account you own. This dollar limit applies to current year payments and prior year payments available for a deduction this year.

I'm not specifically familiar with the VA software.  But, based on the software for other states, you don't do any subtraction. You enter both numbers and let TurboTax do it's thing. It will give you the maximum 2024 deduction and carry over the new balance to next year.

Thanks @Hal_Al .

For clarification,

  • I contributed $6000 every year from 2017 to 2024 so a total contribution of $48,000.
  • I have been deducting $4000 every year (on 2017 through 2023 tax returns).
