Anyone else’s CA state return get rejected due to charitable contributions?

@Aloha1  correct, start from the beginning of your fed return and wait til the question pops up zero that bad boy out, delete old state return and hit “start over” so it’ll bring in the new info and you should be fine. It’s worked for multiple of us here.

Thank you so much! That's actually what I did the 3rd time. I deleted the charitable donations from the federal return and deleted the old state return and restarted it again.  Now I'm just waiting for the status. Crossing my fingers it gets accepted this time around.

@Aloha1  No since it’s only refiling your state taxes it won’t effect your federal return. I corrected mine yesterday and my fed return was accepted and approved for refund after filing last Saturday. Just make sure when you get to the end to efile that it’s only your state taxes checked to refile (mine only had state since my fed was already accepted).

@Agav  Let us know how it pans out, should work as it has for many others in this thread.

My federal return was accepted and already refunded, so I did the $0 on fed side trick for my CA return. But when I checked my tax return documents after changing it to $0 on the fed side, the new refund that i would have supposedly gotten for the federal (which was only $60 less) is now on my tax return documents even though I was already refunded the original amount from two weeks ago. Does this matter?

@ninasal  that I’m not sure about as having the contribution there or not didn’t make any difference in my refund or how much I owed on my taxes. I doubt that’d be an issue but I’m not a tax expert, only passing along what I know to get around this glitch. I would assume since your fed return was already refunded and processed that it doesn’t make any difference but that’s just my opinion not a fact.

Fingers crossed this works. Mines been rejected 4 times. I even went through it with their customer service department looking at my screens. She didn't see it either. I just deleted my charitable contributions. Hope it works this time.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I'll wait and see what happens. Last I need is to be audited for $60 dollars. Haha.

It’s worked for most of us that have tried it. I do want to just emphasize I’m not a tax professional/expert and this is just how I got around my state return from continually getting rejected. If you are unsure/weary of my directions always consult a tax professional.

Anyone else’s CA state return get rejected due to charitable contributions?

@ninasal Here’s my logic why it doesn’t matter: the federal return you did e-file has the charitable contribution on it so it shouldn’t mess anything up, just because it changed some numbers on the new fed return you can download is not what was sent to the IRS before you went back and zero’ed the charitable contributions. So they got what you originally filed, I think TurboTax just changes the forms if you edit them even if they’ve already been sent accepted and approved.

Anyone else’s CA state return get rejected due to charitable contributions?

Yeah that was my logic as well. I have the original tax return document that includes the charitable contributions portion. The first fed return is the accurate one. The second one was never sent since it never e-filed and only CA was e-filed. I figure it should be fine. Another question though: On the fed side, when you changed it to $0 under the charitable contributions for CARES Act page, there's a part before that where it asks about car registration and medical expenses and then donations to charity and has the options $0 and then $1-$4000 or whatever, did you change that to $0 as well?

@ninasal  I don’t recall entering anything for any of those other sections.

It's a part in the federal portion that determines whether to standardize or itemize. But either way, thank you for the replies. You've been very helpful!
