If you live in a state that does not have income tax (like Tennessee), you should make sure that all the boxes in the state section are completely blank.

I’m having the same issue here in TN. I deleted box 15 and now there are no errors. Will the IRS accept the return even though I omitted box 15? It just seems odd to omit something that is on my W2.
If there are no amounts in the State/Local section of your W2:
Choose the trash can next to that row to clear all entries out of that row (includes box 15)
If there are amounts in that row, you cannot delete it, you will need to contact your employer and obtain the State ID.
There is an amount in box 16 (state wages, tips, etc.). It is the same number that is in box 1 at the top of the W-2. The employer (TN-based) said they don't have a state ID number. So, since there is an amount in one of the boxes on that row and I cannot delete all the contents of that row, what do I do now?
After reading other forums, I have tried:
-entering the federal ID exactly as printed
-entering the federal ID without the dash between the numbers
-entering NONE
I am truly at a loss here of what to enter.
TN does Not tax wages. All lines on a W2 for TN state should be blank. No entry at all for boxes 15-20 for TN. Please select the trashcan icon and delete the row. @danielleharper
Thank you very much, I will do that. I tried it before asking my question on this forum and got nervous that I had done something wrong when the program prompted me to enter the values back in if they were listed on the W-2.
I will go back and delete all the values. Also, should I request an updated W-2 from the employer that has boxes 15-20 blank? Again, the current W-2 I have does list the state in box 15, but the state ID is blank, there is a value in box 16, and boxes 17-20 are blank.
Just want to confirm that I am doing this correctly. 🙂
You are. Your employer filed the W2 with the IRS and has TN there so the federal knows which state is connected to the income. That box is really for the employer and federal convenience since you do not need it. No worries, delete away!

What do I put in line 15 for the state id number
In Line 15, you should have the State Code (TN) followed by the Employer's State ID Number (a number like xx-xxxxxxx).
If this is blank, use the Employer Identification Number at the top of your W-2.
