I had to mail my Federal return because I had to supply signed forms for a car donation.
Now TurboTax says I need to efile my federal before I can efile my state taxes.
I can't efile the federal because they already have it via mail and that will confuse them to no end.
What do I do, I paid for efile!

You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You will need to mail in your state return.
You cannot electronically file your return if you did not electronically file your federal return.
I recommend you contact us so we can assist you with your account and the fees already paid.
it would have been nice to know that ahead of time; also if I selected the print out to mail option for my feseral return turbo should know that via program flag and allow me to then do the state efile. poor programing I think.
john
so how do I get a refund for the efile portion I already paid for?
John

Look I need to e-file my NYS tax as required by law.
TurboTax is blocking that because I have to mail signed forms this year with the federal taxes.
I need a way to submit my NYS e-file forms from this program
Tell me how to do this, a refund is not going to solve this e-file issue

Unfortunately, there is no way to electronically file your state return since you mailed in your federal return.
New York requires you to e-file if you meet all three of the following requirements:
Since you had to mail in your Federal return, you no longer are able to electronically file your New York return. Therefore, you do not meet all 3 requirements mentioned on the New York Department of Taxation website. See the following link:
NY Electronic filing requirement
You can try to use the New York website to e-file if you meet their requirements as listed on the link above.
Otherwise, you can mail your returns in. Please see the link below for mailing address.
