I have used TurboTax for many years as it allows me to purchase a non-resident return for the small royalty payments I receive from ND oil leases. Suddenly, it shows a whopping refund amount. This cannot be right, but I cannot tell where the error is located. Since I paid no taxes in ND, and have not received a refund from them in prior years for the same amount of income, something is very wrong. I show no other income on the ND return.

One thing to check is to look at the actual form you used to enter those royalties.
Switch to Form Mode, and see which boxes you entered $$ in for those royalty payments.....it's possible you entered $$ in an ND tax withholding box instead of an income box....or if there was withholding, you missed the decimal point and ended up with a large number as $$ withheld.

All else fails...go back in the interview to the Federal section and delete the Royalty form entirely, and re-enter it....manually...and don't try to upload a PDF or picture, too many foul-ups with "supposedly" Artificial Intelligence entry modes.
That worked. By switching from the step-by-step to the forms, and comparing last year's return. I found the error. Somehow, it showed the estimated state tax payments on the ND return. All good now.
