Multistate tax filing

My friend in 2026 will work and live in NY form January 1 - May 31. On June 1st will move to MA and work for the same company remotely  with address on W-2 form in state of MD. Will work remotely from MA till around middle of September 2026.  Will continue to live in MA but not working for that company. How should my friend file state taxes next year for 2026? If the company in NY will only deduct NY state taxes, should be paid estimated tax payments to MA or not? What else needs to be done for filing correctly taxes to both states and prepared before the tax season?

@taxmen2021 you only pay taxes where you LIVE or where you WORK.

1) file NY part year resident tax return for income earned through 5/30.

2) file MA part year resident tax return for income earned from Jun 1 - Dec 31.

one sticking point.... NY is very particular if you have a NY based job and moved out of state for your convenience.  If your employer required you to move, then fine (no NY tax on that income), but if you moved for convenience, NY would still require you to pay NY tax on that income.

How the software will process 2 NY's filings? Also should be paid Estimated taxes to MA ( if MA will not be deducted, do not know yet)?
