Multiple states return

My husband and I used to live in Georgia in 2023, but we moved to South Carolina at the end of 2023. My husband's company is based in South Carolina so he has both GA and SC taxes every year. Now that we completely moved to SC in 2024, we should have only SC taxes. However, my husband forgot to notify his company about the address change and GA taxes were still withheld in early 2024. When filing 2024 taxes, I used the option that we earned GA income but doesn't live in GA, based on his W2. Then Turbo Tax said that we owed GA tax. I thought we would get refund for paying GA tax and pay SC tax instead. Or is it the case that we need to pay GA tax as well?

Multiple states return

In general you pay income tax to the state where you performed the work.  If your husband was a remote worker and worked in Georgia, you would owe Georgia nonresident taxes on the income he earned in Georgia.  You cannot necessarily rely on the information on your W2 for the state wages because you did not contact the company to change in work location, so they had no way of knowing.  If he did not work in Georgia you have to report zero Georgia wages and then you would not owe Georgia taxes.  If he did work in Georgia, you would report the Georgia income and pay tax on that amount.
