Hey, I worked in NYC but lived in NJ and NYC so my box 1 is showing 113622.49 but my box 16 is showing NJ: 22679.86 and NY: 113622.49

NJ+NY total amount > 113622.49
What to do in this case and how to fill my taxes?

I am on a visa and lived in New Jersey with a lease under my name. Last year, I got a job in NYC and started renting a place there too, also under my name. I split my time between NYC and NJ, staying a few days in each after my lease in New Jersey ended in May, I started living solely in NYC.. My W2 box 16 shows income for both NJ and NY. Do I need to file taxes for just NY, or do I need to file for both NY and NJ?

You will need to file a part year return for each state. States tax all income earned while a resident. The w2 federal wages section should be entered to match the W2 The state wages section should not. Since all of your income was earned in NY, the NY section is correct, enter it as such. For NJ, enter only the amount that would be taxable to them. This can be tricky since they tax any money saved in a retirement plan as pre-tax dollars in NY.

Do your NJ return and calculate the credit. Then do your NY return and indicate that some of the wages have already been taxed by another state. It isn't possible for the program to create a credit before it knows the liability. Your returns may be wrong if you do not prepare the states in this order.

If you need to locate your NJ tax liability, follow these steps:

  1. To locate your tax liability for NJ
  2. Log into your return
  3. Select state taxes
  4. Enter NJ  for which you need the liability
  5. On the left, go to Tax Tools
  6. Select Tools
  7. Select View Tax Summary
  8. You will see Summary of your "NJ" Return at the top.
  9. Locate the line that says Total Tax
  10. Write that number down.
  11. Return to your NY return and enter that number where it asks for the liability for NJ

Thanks Amy for the reply.

I am on F1 visa so I am using sprintax and they are asking me how much I earned in NJ and how much I earned in NY

Shall I put NJ INCOME: whatever mention in box 16

and NY INOME: box1 minus box 16 (NJ income)

Would this work?

I am not familiar with Sprintax. You will just need to verify that your tax forms show the correct income to each state. NY is where you earned the income so they tax the full amount. Which is why you need a NJ credit.
