The formula on the line 39 worksheet appears to be doubling up on an addback for the federal charitable deduction.  It is already starting with the number before the federal charitable deduction.

No, the federal 1040 line 11 is after the charity deduction. The federal 1040 line 11 is carried to MN form M1 line 1. The charity is added back on line 2 for those claiming standard deduction.

My question is not about the addback on the Schedule M-1, but on the MN schedule 1 Line 39 formula.

It starts with line 9 from the federal return which is before the charitable deduction on the federal return.  The schedule 1 line 39 worksheet in turbotax is starting with federal line 9 and then adding the charitable deduction back which creates a duplication.  This affects the formulas down through the worksheet calculation.

Ahhh. I am looking through MN forms and there is no schedule 1. I think the M1M worksheet for Social Security must be what you are viewing. I manually went through the state worksheet and compared the final answer with the program. I used numbers higher than the standard MFJ pf $79,480 to test the accuracy.

Please see page 8 for the worksheet for Form M1, Individual Income Tax

The worksheet does use a different method but it got me to the same answer. As long as the bottom line answer is correct, that is what matters.

If for some reason, yours does not match up to the state and you are concerned, please follow these steps for a diagnostic token for further investigation.

    • If you are online, go to tools > share file with agent > 6 digit number pops up.
