I am writing as I am having issues with the desktop version. I am a MT resident, my wife is a Wyoming resident. She works in Wyoming and has no MT income. Reading the MT requirements we should be able to joint file federal and for state file separately spouse not filing as she is not a resident and has no MT income. Turbo tax desktop doesn't seem to want to allow me to do this filing status. I know next year the option for this goes away but it shouldnt be an issue for us filing 23 taxes. How do I go about correcting this issue and filing this way?

Are you doing them right? See this article on how to file a joint federal return and file separate state returns…..

You need to do 3 separate federal returns. One for Joint and 1 for each spouse to do the mock separate federal return to do the separate state returns. Or I guess just 2 separate federal returns if she is not filing.
So in the Desktop program go up to FILE - NEW to start a new separate Federal return to make the separate state return.
Thanks for the reply. I was definitely not doing 3 different returns. I will work through them and if i have any other questions get back here.
Thank you!
