Mail from IOWA department of revenue

Hello everyone,

I have the following case: I have e-filed my state and federal taxes (2021) with Turbotax, however since it was my first time doing it I didn't know that I had to file 2021 and 2020 separately so I inserted both W-2 forms (from both years) in one file. Anyway, I got the federal return and was advised to wait for the state return as well before I amend. I got the federal return (I forgot to point that I am applying for return only, I don't have to pay taxes) by direct deposit and the money is in my bank account. Today I got a mail from IOWA department of revenue asking for the following before they proceed. tax.jpg

I guess they saw that something is not correct with the initial filing, but I know that and I was waiting for approval or rejection before I amend as I was advised. What is the best way to proceed now? Shall I amend now since e-file amendment will reach them and they will see the corrections or I should send them only the 2021 W-2. I am a bit frustrated, any tips would be appreciated.

I would send back the notice with an amended 2021 Iowa return showing only the 2021 w-2. include a letter of explanation. something like. I'm submitting an amended return because I accidentally included a 2020 W-2 on the original 2021return.    Don't know what your 2020 Iowa return would be like, but I would include the 2020 return and change the explanation accordingly.  this would require either manual preparation or the purchase of TurboTax desktop software.

It's not clear if you've gotten a notice from the IRS about 2021? generally, you should not submit an amended Federal return until the original is fully processed. in some cases like this, the IRS may change your return automatically with no need to file an amended return.  don't know about 2020.

here's a link to 2020 IRS instructions so you can determine if you must file.   if you do or want to in order to get your refund, it must be mailed in.
