MA tax withheld in error

We moved from MA to VA at the end of 2015. However, our employers did not change our address until February 2016 and so MA taxes were withheld, even though we did not live in MA in 2016. How do we file this? Thanks!

It is unlikely that your payroll department will correct this error, so, when preparing your taxes:

1) Claim VA residency and proceed through your federal return, putting the W2 in as printed

2) When you get the the state section, prepare a Mass non-resident return first

3) When done with MA prepare a VA tax return, which will credit you for any taxes ultimately paid to MA.
