MA Resident - W-2 question if worked in NY State for a week

My W-2 is showing total wages for both the MA state box and the NY state box. All other states I've worked in are just those states wages. How will this effect my tax return filing. Is this correct? Or should the MA state box be JUST MA wages?

Your W-2 is correct. Since Massachusetts is your resident state, they will tax all of your income. Then, you need to look for a credit for taxes paid to another state so your Massachusetts tax can be credited for the taxes paid to other states on the same income. New York taxes all income received then reduces your income tax to reflect the percentage of your income earned in other states.

Thank you. Should I know my NY wages when I got to file my taxes? Or does that not come into account?

Yes, your NY based income does matter.

In the NY interview it will give the opportunity to post the amount of income you received from NY sources.

You will then be taxed in NY on that amount.

You will then be taxed on all of the Massachusetts income, and get a credit for the amount of NY tax you paid up to the amount Massachusetts would have taxed it.
