Living full-time in and working from an RV in multiple states

Can anyone please look into this complicated life situation and advise which state taxes this married couple (filing jointly) should pay?

Until 2015 - my husband and I lived and worked in Maryland.

2015 - my husband got a job in CA and we moved to CA but I kept my job in MD, I just became remote from CA. My MD company had CA office too so I too became taxed for CA taxes.

2015 - 2021 - we paid CA taxes.

June 2021 - we left CA and became nomads. Our son lived in Florida, so we drove to Florida and got Florida driver licenses, registered our car in Florida and got mail forwarding address in Florida. For 2021, I still paid CA state taxes because my employer was CA based anyway.

2022 - we spent January - April traveling internationally, May-July - in California, bought an RV in Oregon in August and drove it  in Aug - Oct to Florida via several US states and Canada. Nov and Dec we spent in Florida. We worked everywhere from the road. We registered our RV in Florida.

My husband pays state taxes for California because he works for CA company but what about me?

Last week, TurboTax asked me to pay state taxes for 2022 for Maryland (more than $7000) and I did pay it online, however it looks like I should not be paying MD taxes if I am Florida-based remote employee. But if I understand it correctly, Florida won't recognize me as a resident because I didn't spend 6 months and one day in Florida in 2022 and I'm not planning to do that in 2023 either. Should I just pay state taxes to Maryland and that's it? How do other people do it who live full-time in RV and work from all over like me?

Two more details: 1) I did not kept a log where we spent each day in 2022 as we drove from Oregon through Canada to Maine and then to Florida, sometimes spending a day or two in any state. 2) My company closed the second office in California in 2022 and now we only have an office in Maryland.

Your response would be very appreciated.

Sincerely,

Lela

MD requires a tax return if you have MD sourced income. See Nonresident Instructions.

You should pay MD and may want to have taxes withheld again for MD.

Each state has different laws and income requirements for filing.  You can contact the Department of Revenue for each state. You probably won't need to file another state return since you are not setting up shop and creating a presence. A few states like to tax you for being physically present, but you did not earn your money from that state. Tax laws change each year, all you can do is keep a log and check the states you visit.

Each person in an RV has their own story and system. Have fun!
