Lived and Worked in Texas but W2 show AZ

Hello,

I am  in the process of doing my taxes and while doing the state part I am having some issues.  I live and work in Texas on the oil fields. I lived in Texas in the same camp housing provided by the oil company all year round. I have two W-2s for different companies.

1. One W2 shows  AZ in box 15 and income in box 16, but nothing in box 17.

2. The second W2 shows AZ in box 15  and income in box 16 as well as income in box 17.

When I include all the information I am shown that I owe over $1400 to AZ even when I don't live there and I don't work there. Arizona is used only as a mailing address as my parents live there and my mail is safer with them there than in the oil fiel man camp where I sleep. Even when I choos the non-resident option I am shown I owe taxes to AZ.

Thank you

Did your employer withhold AZ taxes?  If not, then you do not need to file a state tax return at all.

If your employer did withhold AZ taxes, then you will need to file an AZ return in order to claim a refund.  To do this, you will create a nonresident AZ return and walk through the first several screens.  You will come to a screen that says AZ Income.  The amount that was listed on your W2 will be entered there.  You will change this to $0.  This will remove all your tax liability and give you a refund of any taxes you paid in.

Thanks for responding Vanessa,  your answer was very helpful. I have two W2s and one of them does not have any tax withheld so according to your answer I am not worry about that one. But, for the second W2 there was AZ tax withheld; I'll do as you suggested on that one and I will change the income to $0 for box 16 and claim the  state income I paid in for 17 for a refund.

Again, Thank you.
