My 364-day work assignment in DC began in May, but my permanent residence is in Kansas. What is my state of residence for tax purposes?

My employer is still based in Kansas City. Since the residency is not considered a relocation, it is set at one day less than a full year (364 days). I am expected to return to KC in May 2018.
