If I never set foot in CA during the year and was a non-resident during the year, but worked remotely for an employer with a CA address, do I need to pay any state tax to CA? thanks

No. You do not have to pay California income tax if you never lived or worked in California. Nonresidents only have to pay California income tax if they temporarily relocate to CA. In addition, if you are physically present in California for at least nine months you are presumed to be a resident of California for purposes of the California personal income tax.
