Illinois 1040 line 2 not populating correctly in Turbo Tax

I have completed my 2023 Federal 1040 on Turbo Tax and am working on my 2023 Illinois 1040.  Line 2 of the IL 1040 is "Federally tax-exempt interest and dividends from Federal 1040, line 2a".  However, Turbo Tax is not correctly bringing forward the amount from my federal return into my IL return (federal has $3,922 and IL has $382).  I brought up the IL 1040 input form in Turbo Tax to see if I could override the amount and I can't.   I think there is something incorrect with your programming.  Please help!

couldn't duplicate your error. could you tell us what forms and lines  you used to enter the federal tax-exempt interest and what you put on those lines.

Illinois 1040 line 2 not populating correctly in Turbo Tax

I received a 1099-DIV from Vanguard that included $3,922 of  Exempt interest dividends (on line 12 of the 1099-DIV).  I entered this amount on the Federal Turbo Tax input screen (input screen has "Let's get the details from your 1099-DIV or brokerage statement")  in Box 12 (Exempt-interest dividends)  on this input screen.  My Federal 1040 out of Turbo Tax correctly shows $3,922 in box 2a of the form.  However, when I look at my IL-1040 line 2, it has $382 and it should be pulling the $3,922 from line 2a of my federal 1040.  I have no idea where Turbo Tax is getting $392 from, but it is not correct and there's not a way for me to change it.  Appreciate you looking into this and I hope I provided the info you need to research it further.

Using TurboTax Desktop Premier, I am not able to duplicate your results.

If you are still experiencing this situation, consider deleting the 1099-DIV for and re-entering the form by typing it in rather than importing the document.

Illinois 1040 line 2 not populating correctly in Turbo Tax

I am seeing a similar issue.  The value from Federal 1040 line 2a (Federally exempt interest) is not being transferred to line 2 of the Illinois State Tax Return. The value on the Illinois show $0. This is happening on the online version. I have tried deleting the the 1099-div and re-entering the data manually, but the values are not being transferred over.

Let's get this fixed.

If you are using online, follow these steps:

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, so sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

For stuck information follow these steps:

  1. Delete the form/ worksheet- if possible, see How to Delete
  2. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the information again.

If you are using desktop:

Switch over to Forms mode

Right click on line 2

Override

Enter the amount

If you want to switch from online to desktop,  see How do I switch from TurboTax Online to the TurboTax software?

Illinois 1040 line 2 not populating correctly in Turbo Tax

I was the one who originally posed this question back in early February 2024.  I used the desktop version of Turbo Tax and had manually entered my 1099-DIV into Turbo Tax (vs. importing it).  I tried to do an override back in early February  (as TT Employee AmyC described in her repy today (4/14)),  but Turbo Tax would not allow this field (line 2) to be overriden on the IL-1040 while in Forms mode.  Maybe something has changed since then?  Also, I've found that if Turbo Tax does allow you to override a specific field, Turbo Tax will sometimes consider it to be an error and won't let you file the return electronically.  So you kind of go around in a circle.

For my situation, I never did determine where Turbo Tax was originally getting the $382 on my IL-1040 line 2.  So I went back through all of the questions Turbo Tax asks to make sure I had them correct, because Turbo Tax is only as good as the entries you make (and in the right entry fields).  I messed around with it enough that I finally  got it to work - I can't remember exactly what I changed.  However, my federally tax-exempt interest and dividends was from two sources - a 1099-DIV I received as well as a K-1 form I received.  So for me, my IL-1040 reflected the 1099-DIV portion on line 2 and the K-1 portion on line 3 (Other Additions from Schedule M).  IL-1040 lines 2 and 3 added together came to the Tax Exempt Interest on my Federal 1040 line 2a.  Anyway, "brokentiger" not sure if this info is of any use to you or not.  Just passing it along in case it is.  Since you are using the online version of TT, hopefully AmyC's suggestion worked for you!  It is all so frustrating, though.  Taxes and tax return preparation shouldn't be this complicated and frustrating!!
