If you live in CT and work in RI you should file a RI Non-Resident Tax Return and a CT Resident Tax Return.

Complete your RI tax return first so that the Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State flows to your CT tax return.

You report only the earned income you earned in RI on the RI return.  If you any "unearned income", interest, dividends, etc. that goes on your CT return.

On your CT resident return you report your "worldwide" income.  The Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State should post to your CT return to keep you from being taxed twice on the same income.
