If I moved to Texas from Illinois why do I still have to pay Illinois state taxes?

If you were a resident of Illinois for part of 2016, you're liable for Illinois income tax on your earnings during that period of time. You have to file a part-year resident Illinois return. See this for further info: https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901227-how-do-i-file-a-part-year-state-return
