If you live in North Carolina and did not earned any income, you can delete the state from your tax return and only file for Federal return because Florida does not have state individual income tax. You would file in Florida if you are reporting tangible personal property that is used for business or rental property and is filed with your county property appraiser by April 1st. See Florida DOR link http://floridarevenue.com/property/Pages/LocalOfficials.aspx

However, if you earned income in North Carolina, you will need to report it on your tax return.

How to delete a state return from your tax return

  1. Start from the main Tax Home page from your Online account
  2. Click on Take me to my return
  3. Click on the left side State tab
  4. Then, click Continue
  5. Find the State, then click Delete on the right side. Use this same page if you would like to add a state (see screen page file attached)
