I'm a WI resident but worked all of 2017 in IL while I was a student. Do I need to file in both states?

I never filled out the exemption paperwork to have only WI taxes withheld. My tax return is currently stating that I will owe money to Wisconsin. However, I had already paid the IL income taxes. Do I owe the state of Wisconsin even though the Illinois taxes were taking out of my paycheck? How do I file this?

No, you do not have to file a WI state tax return.  You will only need to file Federal and IL.

Thank you for your quick response. The online form is prompting me to fill out a WI state tax return because that is my residency, should I still only fill out Federal and IL?

Was IL or WI taxes taken out?  If IL, file WI tax return and enter '0' as income so you won't be taxed.

On my income from my Illinois job, I had IL taxes taken out. I entered 0 on my WI tax return and it is still showing I owe for WI. How do I fix this?

There is a place under the personal information tab where you tell the program which state you live in, and then you will be asked a short time later if you have earned any money in another state, you will indicate that you have. The program will then help you prepare the state returns and file them.

Generally if the state you live in and the state you work in have a reciprocal tax agreement then you only need to file in one state not both. If the state you live in and the state you work in do not have this agreement you will then need to file your federal return, then you non-resident state and then your resident state.

It does not give me the option to delete WI. Is this when I fill out the Schedule OS form?
