I am going to assume the interest income is greater than $1100. What is generating the interest? If there isn't an activity in PA that created this interest, you would allocate the interest income to your resident state, which is NY.

You would also need to file a California return, reporting the earned income you made at the internship. NY would tax you on that income as well, but they will give you a credit for the taxes paid to California.

Thank you for your reply. I am using 1040.com to file fed and state taxes. I answered yes to lived in multiple states 78 days in Ca and 35 in NYC. The interest inc is from bonds and div on stocks. Would I file as part time resident in New York?

The interest and dividend income is unearned income and should be allocated between your resident states.   Unearned income does not need to be part of your nonresident returns.

How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return?   Whether or not you should file a part-year resident return depends on whether or not you actually lived in more than one state.

Temporary absences away from your home (NYC) are generally not considered to be permanent moves.    This means that if you went to PA or CA for a defined period of time for work or school and you went there with the intention of return home to NYC, you would not be a resident of those states.    If you earned income in a state other than your resident state(s), you would report that income on a nonresident return.

First you need to determine where you were a resident and where you were a non-resident.   If you were only in CA and PA temporarily (you intended to come back home to NY after completion) - you are a full year resident of NY and a nonresident of CA and PA.    If you moved to either place with the intention of staying there, you are a resident of that state (and NY) and should file part-year resident returns for each state.

Residency rules vary from state to state. For example, if you spend more than a certain number of days in some states, you're considered a resident even if you were not living in the state for very long.    It's best to check with your State Department of Revenue for specific residency rules, especially as they apply to your particular situation.
