File a nonresident North Carolina income tax return.

  1. In the North Carolina section, go to Part-Year and Nonresident Income.
  2. Continue to Nonresident Income Allocations.
  3. Rental/Royalty Income (Loss) will show the amount reported on your Form 1040. Enter the NC portion (North Carolina Income While Nonresident).

If you filed your 2017-2019 returns with TurboTax, you can go back to TurboTax and Add a State to add a NC nonresident return for those years. You will not be able to e-file. Print and mail your returns. You can mail them together. We suggest sending them by certified mail with return receipt so you have proof that they were received by NC.

Ernie, thanks.  That was a straightforward and clear response. I was trying to do the nonresident tax return using the step-by-step format.Once I switched to “Forms,” I was able to find the income allocation section to which you referred. It worked beautifully. Thanks!

For Ernie S0 or anyone who can help:  I followed Ernie’s advice and it all looked good on the 2017 NC non-res return.  Then, while trying to finalize and print, TT “thought” I was amending my 2017 NR return!  Perhaps because I actually HAD amended my federal return.  So TT now says no tax due / no refund.  How to get this back on track?  Thanks.
