What software are you using? If you are using CD/download you get 5 free federal e-files and 5 free returns for one specific state. Does he live in a different state? If you are in the same state, you pay for e-filing the state but you can avoid that e-file fee if you print and mail the state.

If he is in a different state and you do not want to pay to download a second state program you could check his state's tax site and perhaps prepare the state for free on the state's site.
