IRS extensions for tax year 2021 must be filed on or before April 18, 2022 for domestic taxpayers.
It isn't possible to file a post-deadline extension.
Keep in mind: An extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes — but it will keep you from getting a late filing penalty. (You'll still owe interest if you pay after the deadline).
Note: If you're paying additional taxes owed with direct debit, you'll need to provide your 2020 AGI for verification purposes (if you didn't file a 2020 return, enter 0 as your AGI).
If you don't have your AGI, or your extension gets rejected for the wrong AGI, here are 2 options:
If you filed prior to the deadline, but were rejected, you will likely have until April 22 to mail in your extension.
@jesse Davis
Hi, I filed for PA extension through mail. In the extension form, it was asking for the date until which I need the extension. By mistake instead of Oct 15th, I wrote Oct 17th. Is there any way to change date to 15th or will my extension gets rejected?
How do I file an extension for a tax return that has been rejected
I can't be sure, but I doubt your extension will be rejected, since October 15th is a Saturday.
It does not matter if your return was rejected on e-file, you can still extend it.

Maya, have you read that BS page you referenced? Its worthless
wrong again
there is no "file extension" button
why dont you just tell people they have to log out of Turbo Tax and log into another site online and then file an extension. For that matter, why no just have the software tell you how to do it. Why does TT make everything so **bleep** complicated!
look, people at TT need to follow their advice and see what they get
to be clear, you only get 1 of the 5 pages when you click on that
I had to go to IRS site and print it out because TT is too cheap to give me the entire form....
Isn't it ridiculous that for the download/CD TurboTax (Premier version no less) it only allows for a paper extension instead of having a direct link to be able to file electronically? I don't think it has always been this way as I almost always file an extension.
@TaxWhipper Use this TurboTax website to e-file an extension - https://turbotax.intuit.com/irs-tax-extensions/
Thank you. I did eventually find that link. My point, is why did I have to go hunting for it instead of it being in the TurboTax software itself in the extension section? There, it doesn't give an option for electronic filing.
I have been using the TurboTax desktop editions for over twenty years and it has never had an option in the desktop program to e-file the extension. I cannot tell you why the programmers never put a link in the desktop editions to take the user to the TurboTax e-file website directly from the desktop edition.
Hey, I don’t know where do you live. But check with google. IRS and CA state offered an automatic extension until October 16, 2023. However, I don’t know why Turbo tax software didn’t inform that for us? Can we still e file after April 18, 2023?
Imperial, Kern, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, and Sierra. Residents and businesses located in the above 7 counties are must file and pay by the normal established deadlines. This includes: Individuals whose tax returns and payments are due on April 18, 2023. All other counties are Oct 16.
