How to Declare Maine COVID Disaster Relief Payment?

From early November 2021 through December 31, 2021, the Maine Revenue Services issued Disaster Relief Payments to eligible Maine citizens in the amount of $285. Maine is not taxing these payments, however, they are subject to federal income tax.

On the Maine state form, there is a place to certify receiving the payment. However, there does not appear to be anywhere to declare the payment on the federal form.

Will the state of Maine be sending out some kind of 1099 for these payments? Is there another way to declare this income on the federal form?

How to Declare Maine COVID Disaster Relief Payment?

It is not expected that Maine DOR will send out some form 1099 to the relief payment recipients.

Please read this Maine Revenue page for more information.

On your Federal tax return, you can report this payment as Other Reportable Income.

In TurboTax, open your return and follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Wages and Income on top of the screen
  2. Scroll down to locate the Less Common Income section
  3. Click Show more and click Start next to Miscellaneous Income at the bottom
  4. On the next page, click Start next to Other Reportable Income
  5. Describe this income as "Maine disaster relief payment".
