How can I remove a nonresident state? I accidentally started a NY state return instead of a MA.

Go into the state interview section.

You will see your states listed as shown in the example below.

Select Delete to the right of the New York return.

Then select Add Another State in the box at the bottom to start your Massachusetts return.

However, on mine it does not allow me to "delete" because there are a few boxes on the NY return that require codes that I do not know what to insert. Specifically, codes for the Form IT225. I don't think it is allowing me to delete without completing these forms although I have tried to insert "0" and also a "1.00" but neither works.

Try deleting the forms within the return then the main form using this method:

1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
2. Locate Tax Tools 
3. Select Tools
4. See the pop-up window Tool Center
5. Choose Delete a form
6. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list 
7. Follow the instructions
