If you are a permanent resident of CA but are in NC on a temporary basis and earned income in NC income then you will need to file a NC nonresident state income tax return (for your NC source income only - your NC wages). You will also need to file a CA resident state tax return (for all income from all sources including CA wages). You will get a state income tax credit in NC for any CA state income taxes that you paid on your nonresident CA state income tax return.
You will want to work on your nonresident NC state income tax return first. You will then take a tax credit from your nonresident NC state income taxes on your resident CA state income tax return. (Please note that you will only get a tax credit for your NC state income taxes up to the amount of CA state income taxes that would have been paid if the income was earned in CA).
Just follow the TurboTax guide when working on your states (remembering to do your nonresident state return first) and TurboTax will do all the calculations and credits to your resident states return

However, if you made a permanent move to NC and your wife and child are still permanent residents of CA, then your situation become more complicated.
If you file a joint federal income tax return, you may want to consider filing separately for state tax purposes. (One issue, however, is that CA is a Community Property State . This will complicate your married filing separately state tax filings, if you choose this option.
