Hello , I'm currently a student in North Carolina and last year in April began working here . My wife and son live in California. Would I file taxed in NC or CA

Hello I been working for a year now I'm north Carolina,  and I go to school here . My wife is finishing her degree in California and worked a bit as well. How would we file taxes? Under this situation. I know in the past I was not working I'm north Carolina and would work summers when I would be in break and work in California. This is the first full year that I am working under my profession.  Wife worked at from 2017 to June 2017 in California.  So I'm the main provider for her and son finally.

If you are a permanent resident of CA but are in NC on a temporary basis and earned income in NC income then you will need to file a NC nonresident state income tax return (for your NC source income only - your NC wages). You will also need to file a CA resident state tax return (for all income from all sources including CA wages). You will get a state income tax credit in NC for any CA state income taxes that you paid on your nonresident CA state income tax return.

You will want to work on your nonresident NC state income tax return first. You will then take a tax credit from your nonresident NC state income taxes on your resident CA state income tax return. (Please note that you will only get a tax credit for your NC state income taxes up to the amount of CA state income taxes that would have been paid if the income was earned in CA).

Just follow the TurboTax guide when working on your states (remembering to do your nonresident state return first) and TurboTax will do all the calculations and credits to your resident states return

Here is additional information about filing in multiple states (select "see more answer" to view the entire attachment)

However, if you made a permanent move to NC and your wife and child are still permanent residents of CA, then your situation become more complicated.

If you file a joint federal income tax return, you may want to consider filing separately for state tax purposes. (One issue, however, is that CA is a Community Property State . This will complicate your married filing separately state tax filings, if you choose this option.
