Hello. This does not work as the system is asking if I was the beneficiary, which is not true. I am the one contributing to the 529 plan on behalf of my children. I also did not receive form 1099-Q for distributions. Once I select "No" for both, I am unable to proceed further to enter by actual contributions.
It SOUNDS like the plan administrator is applying the contribution as a return of the distribution.
If you took a distribution but did not get Form 1099-Q, and you also put money INTO the account, the contribution may not qualify.
I suggest you ask the plan administrator how they reported the distribution and contribution.
Hello. My apology, but I am not sure if I understood correctly.
Please note that I am the one contributing on behalf of my kids, and I did not take any distribution at all. I have the form from my 529 plan, yet, I am unable to enter my contributions anywhere in Turbo Tax.
The first item on the Income that Illinois handles differently screen is College savings and prepaid tuition plan contributions. Click Start or Revisit there, and enter your contributions. See screenshot below. If you have already went through this section, it will be at the top of the Income that Illinois handles differently page.
You are allowed to subtract up to $10,000 in contributions if you are single and $20,000 if you are married filing a joint return for contributions you made to the “Bright Start” program, the "College Illinois" Illinois Prepaid Tuition Trust Fund, or the "Bright Directions" program during the tax year. The total subtraction for contributions made to both college savings plans may not exceed $10,000 for single filers and $20,000 for joint filers, even if you contributed more. Contributions to any other IRC Section 529 programs may not be deducted. See Illinois Dept of Revenue
Much appreciated - I was able to navigate to the section. Thanks again.
