Should my employer be taking out North Carolina as well as Alabama taxes? Do I need to file a return for North Carolina as well as Alabama?

Many people work for employers who are based in other states. If you live and work in the state of Alabama, you pay income tax to Alabama. You do not have to file a tax return for North Carolina, nor does your employer need to withhold tax for NC. Is the employer withholding tax for Alabama? If they are not withholding tax for Alabama then you should be paying estimated quarterly tax payments to Alabama yourself to avoid a big tax due amount (and perhaps an underpayment penalty) at tax time.
They are currently taking taxes out for Alabama, the state I live in. The company I work for is in North Carolina. Is there an IRS law/ rule that I can have for documentation. I have other teammates in similar situations and would love to have something to show them as they do not believe me that they only have to pay taxes in the state they live in.
Thanks!
The IRS does not control state tax laws, so there is no "IRS law" to give you. The states have their own tax laws. There are several states that do not even have a state income tax; there are some states in which there are reciprocal agreements with other states (which is used if you live in one state but work in the other state); and there are a few states (such as CT, DE, NE,NY, PA) in which "remote" workers might still have to pay tax even if they live and work in a different state. (These states have "convenience of employer" laws). As you will see from the link provided---Alabama and North Carolina do not have a reciprocal agreement. So....You pay income tax to the state you LIVE and WORK in---not to the state where your employer is based. If you were living in one state and working in another state, the answer could be quite different for you.
