I bought New York (not my state) to do my daughter's taxes. I just want to verify the following statement about free e-file that appears on the e-file selection page:
Note: Regarding your New York return and NY state law
You are required to E-file your New York State income tax return.
New York state requires most taxpayers to file electronically if they are using tax software to prepare their return. Please note there is no additional fee for e-filing. The law also provides that once you’ve paid for tax preparation software, you can’t be charged and additional fee for e-filing.
That seems clear to me, but everything else I've seen indicates that since I will use my free file for my own state, I will have to pay for NYS efile. Is NYS just different?

If you are using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions there is an e-file charge which is currently $20 for any state tax return e-filed. The only exception is for a New York state tax return which is free to e-file.
To avoid this state e-file charge the state return can be printed and mailed.
Note - There is one free state program download included when purchasing the Deluxe edition or higher from the TurboTax website. This does NOT include one free state e-file.

Thanks. Yes, I mis-spoke (wrote). I did know that I would need to pay $20 to efile Maryland, which was my "free" state software with the purchase of Deluxe.
I just wanted to verify that since I bought NYS, the efile would be free, which is certainly what the efile selection page says.
