Form D-400

My wife and I are filing jointly. My wife is the only one with an income. We live in North Carolina. We used Turbotax last year with no problems. This year they want form D-400, individual tax for NC. If we're filing jointly, why do we need this form?

The "individual" in the name of the form is just meant to distinguish it from the forms for trusts, partnerships, corporations, and the like.  For tax purposes, a married couple filing jointly is one individual taxpayer.

On the form itself, you will have the option to indicate your filing status, which is married filing jointly.

Annnd..the D-400 is the main state tax form that you file in NC every year.

The NC DOR has delayed tax filing for everyone until the middle of February....not just for your situation...everyone.

Annnd, we didn't have to use a D400 last year, or the year before, or the year before, etc. We used Turbotax and it did everything for us.

@Zane32962

IF you filed a NC tax return for 2020 (or any earlier year too), it was a D-400 form.  Even if it was e-filed, the data went in "as-If" it was a D-400.

IF you go into your TTX account, and go to your 2020 tax file and download the PDF file, the NC tax return it contains will be the D-400.
