My wife and I are filing jointly. My wife is the only one with an income. We live in North Carolina. We used Turbotax last year with no problems. This year they want form D-400, individual tax for NC. If we're filing jointly, why do we need this form?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
The "individual" in the name of the form is just meant to distinguish it from the forms for trusts, partnerships, corporations, and the like. For tax purposes, a married couple filing jointly is one individual taxpayer.
On the form itself, you will have the option to indicate your filing status, which is married filing jointly.
Annnd..the D-400 is the main state tax form that you file in NC every year.
The NC DOR has delayed tax filing for everyone until the middle of February....not just for your situation...everyone.
Annnd, we didn't have to use a D400 last year, or the year before, or the year before, etc. We used Turbotax and it did everything for us.
IF you filed a NC tax return for 2020 (or any earlier year too), it was a D-400 form. Even if it was e-filed, the data went in "as-If" it was a D-400.
IF you go into your TTX account, and go to your 2020 tax file and download the PDF file, the NC tax return it contains will be the D-400.
I did go there and I don't see the form. My TTX has 'continue filing' under state tax. When I press continue, it asks me for the D400. What am I missing?
As SteamTrain said above, there is a delay by the state of North Carolina in releasing the forms that everyone needs to file their tax return, Form D-400 is required for all returns by residents, and is expected to be available later this month.
Here is a list of the availability of forms for North Carolina.
I was talking about looking at already completed prior year tax returns to find the D-400 for those years, not the 2021 one, which is in-progress.
Assuming you have logged into the exact-same online account as you used in the prior years...To see "old" D-400 forms (not 2021's form), you scroll down to the bottom of the screen and expand "Your tax returns & documents".....then select the year, then download the PDF from that year from it's menu.
