Forgot to include state W-2 row

This year I worked remotely and paid taxes on my income in two states (OH, NY). I just filed my taxes and realized I forgot to include the OH information from boxes 15/16/17 on my W-2. I need to amend my taxes now, but I'm not sure which returns I need to amend (I submitted a federal return along with IL/OH/NY state returns). According to the turbotax calculations, there is only a change in the Ohio return -- I should be receiving money back, no changes to any of the other 3.

When I start the amending process in turbotax, it's confusing because it seems to start immediately with the IL 1040X and asking if I have filed a federal 1040X, which of course I have not yet. I would appreciate to understand which of these forms I have to file at all and in what order.

I’m assuming you live in Illinois and worked remotely for companies in New York and Ohio.

Ohio does not tax remote workers so your employer should not be withholding state tax. You can file for a refund to get everything back, which sounds like what TurboTax is doing.

As awesome Tax Champ @Hal_Al advises, wait until OH is processed.

If you are getting your OH tax back, there will be no change to federal, New York or Illinois. You can cancel those amendments or just ignore them and print and mail the amended OH return.

IL and NY will have a screen asking if you want to amend. Say No. For federal, select cancel amend in the left column.

You need to wait until the original Ohio return is fully processed before amending.
