Good Evening,
I am having some difficulty figuring out how to file my state tax returns jointly. I filed my federal taxes jointly with a company here in Texas only to find out that they also don't file state taxes. So now I am stuck on how to go about filing them. My wife and I were both active duty military for the 2021 tax year. Her home of record was California so she paid California state taxes. My home of record was Missouri so I paid Missouri state taxes. We bought a house in Louisiana and have had tenants living there since October of 2021. I have a 1099 Misc from my property manager. I should also have to file state taxes for Louisiana too as well right? I have a turbo tax account and have all my documents uploaded but it is wanting me to still file my joint federal return. Is there a way for me to go about doing this in the software? I've scoured the community forums for an answer but can't seem to find one. I am beyond stressed at this point.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
I've also tried having multiple chats with the "support" team here and end up disconnected or ignored. I've currently been waiting for them to call me well over the "estimated" time
I actually received the call from Intuit, the lady was rude and was rushing me off the phone. Basically, she told me that I can not use the TurboTax platform to submit my state returns since I filed with someone else. She said that I would have to submit them via mail. Am I screwed? Sorry for the multiple replies. Am just stressed to the MAX with this.
You cannot use TurboTax to prepare a "stand alone" state tax return. When you use this software the information flows from the federal return to the state return.
If you only want to prepare a state return then you can try to use the tax site for your states or get the paper forms for your states to do by hand and mail in.

If I were to submit it through TurboTax like I was filing a full return, wouldn't my federal return just be rejected since it was already accepted?
You are correct the federal return will reject and therefore so will any state returns filed with it. To work this in TurboTax you would need to create "mock" separate federal returns which will not be filed but will allow you to generate the accompanying state return for printing/mailing.
In online versions you would need separate accounts for each separate federal/state return. However in a desktop version you can create up to 5 separate returns in one product.
Here is a link with more information if needed.
As noted by @PattiF you also can research the individual state websites (below) to create/file there; usually for free.
