Filing California Taxes as part-year resident

Hello,

I moved from California to Maryland in 2022.

I have W2 income from working in California.

I also have 1099 income that I earned while being a Maryland resident but working in California (after I moved to maryland).

I don't know how to enter this 1099 income in Turbotax so that I am not double taxed.

My understanding is that I have to report the 1099 income to both maryland and california, but that I will then get a tax credit from Maryland for taxes paid to California.

Any help is appreciated!

There will be a screen in the state tax sections where you will be able to allocate the different components of your income to the state you are working on at the time.

Do you happen to know how I find this?

Thiere is an area where I can put in the amount of "Non-maryland income" but this specifically states to enter income earned when I was not a resident of Maryland (ie before moving to Maryland).

My 1099 income was earned as a resident of maryland, but working in California.

The money you earned while a resident of Maryland is taxable in Maryland regardless of where you earned it. The money you earned while working in California or living there is taxable in California. When you prepare your Maryland income tax return, look for the Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State. Complete that section by entering in the tax you paid to California and you will get a credit against your Maryland income tax.

TurboTax may apply the California tax to your Maryland return automatically if you prepare the California income tax return first. Otherwise, will need to look on the California Tax Summary to find what the California income tax is. You can do this by following these steps while working on the California tax return:

  1. Click on Tax Tools in the left menu bar
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Look under Other Helpful links….
  4. Choose View Tax Summary
