Thank You for the answer...under the FAQ it says "If you made energy efficient improvements to your home like energy-saving roofs, windows, skylights, and doors, you'll be able to claim the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit for 10% of amounts paid for qualified energy efficiency improvements, up to a lifetime cap of $500"

Does anyone happen to know what constitutes an energy-saving roof?  I had the roof redone with new shingles.

A new roof is an energy saving improvement.

Okay thanks!  So I can input the cost of the roof as an "Energy Efficiency Upgrade" on my State Return?

The entry would go on your Federal Return.

Actually it appears that it would not go on the Federal Return because the shingles are not "asphalt roof with appropriate cooling granules specifically designed to reduce the heat loss or gain of your home" With regard to the State (Idaho), I'm still not sure.  I am checking in to the term "Energy Efficiency Upgrades" with the State

In addition, it cannot be deducted in the State (Idaho) as well....the State deduction does not include roofs

My question is where would you put the amount if the energy efficiency upgrade is not on the list on the 2019 Federal Tax form?  Mine list Solar electric cost, solar water heating costs, small wind energy property, geothermal heat pump property, fuel cell property costs and kilowatt capacity of fuel cell property.  (because those are so normal).  Where do the normal upgrades fit in?

I believe you are in the wrong section of the program.  Try using these instructions:

You can enter them in the Deductions & Credits section:

  1. Open or continue your return, if you don't already have it open.
  2. In TurboTax, search for energy improvements. (Don't search for energy credit as this will take you to the wrong place.)
  3. Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  4. At the bottom of the Energy-Saving Home Improvements screen, answer Yes and continue. Follow the instructions.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades

We replaced energy efficiency sliding doors and windows for a cost of $13,150. No breakdown of installation. We also upgraded our original central air/heating for and energy efficient system, at a total cost of $27,662 (rebates and credits deducted).

Where do we report these improvements for maximum tax credit, if any?
