I want to file a NJ state 1040, but in single name. The Turbotax program shows only joint info. How do I adjust the NJ 1041 to reflect a single name not joint? I live in SC and that will be filed under the joint info.

You said "How do I adjust the NJ 1041 . . .?" I assume that's a typo, and that you meant 1040, not 1041.

If you were not a New Jersey resident in 2021, you file Form NJ-1040NR, not NJ-1040. If you told TurboTax that you lived in South Carolina all year but had income from New Jersey, it will use the nonresident form.

If you had New Jersey income and your spouse did not, that is an exception to the general rule that you must use the same filing status for New Jersey as you use on your federal tax return. You can file as married filing separately for New Jersey, even though you file as married filing jointly for your federal and South Carolina tax returns.

When you start your New Jersey tax return, one of the first screens you see says "Other situations that may apply to you," and it has a list with a number of checkboxes. One box will already be checked, for "I need to verify my main form or residency selection." Leave it checked, but also check the next box, which says "I am not filing with the same marital status as I used on my Federal return." On the next screen, confirm that you are filing a nonresident return. The next screen after that lets you select your filing status for New Jersey. You can select "Married filing separate return." Then it will prepare a New Jersey nonresident return that is in your name only.
