DOES "UTAH EDUCATIONAL SAVINGS PLAN (529 PLAN)" QUALIFY AS A DEDUCTION ON FEDRAL TAXES?

I donate money into a “Utah Educational Savings Plan” (529 Plan) for college for two of my grandchildren for birthdays, Christmas etc. I usually give $100 each time.  CAN THIS BE SHOWN AS A DEDUCTION AND IF SO WHERE DO YOU SHOW IT?

DOES "UTAH EDUCATIONAL SAVINGS PLAN (529 PLAN)" QUALIFY AS A DEDUCTION ON FEDRAL TAXES?

Contributions to a 529 plan are not tax deductible. However, the withdrawals are tax free.

The Utah tax credit is 5% of the maximum qualifying contribution of 3,840 dollars per beneficiary (for joint filers) or a maximum credit of 192 dollars. See the explanation below and here at https://uesp.org/why-choose-uesp/tax-advantages/ :

For the 2017 tax year, a Utah individual taxpayer (or trust) who is a UESP account owner may claim a 5 percent Utah state income tax credit up to certain limits on contributions to his or her account or accounts. Utah-based corporations may claim a state income tax deduction up to certain limits. The maximum credit and deduction are reviewed each year and may be changed.

To claim the tax credit or deduction:

  • The beneficiary must be younger than age 19 when designated on the account.

  • If the beneficiary is younger than age 19 when designated, the account owner can claim the credit each year a contribution is made for the life of the account.
