When figuring credit for tax paid to another state on my New Mexico return, do I enter tax OWED to the other state, or tax PAID to the other state? (I overpaid the other state's taxes and will get a refund that will be taxed as NM income next year.)

you should have done your nonresident state first, so the proper credit carries yo your resident state computation. what you enter, if it's even needed even, is your tax liability in that other state on income taxed by both states. this may be neither the amount owed or paid. you didn't specify the other state so we can tell you what line the tax liability is on.
Thanks for your reply. I have done my return for the nonresident state, which is CA, the "correct" amount did show up in Turbo Tax, and it was amount of tax liability. But I overpaid that amount.
Turbo Tax has made mistakes in prior years which I've had to clear up on my own after the fact, so I want to confirm that the tax liability to the nonresident state is the correct amount and not the actual amount of tax PAID to the nonresident state.
