Change in State taxes due

I already received my Federal tax refund (electronically filed) and I owe state taxes (did not file electronically and I am waiting until last minute to send IT 1040 and payment). With new waiver on unemployment, it looks like the amount I now owe state has decreased. Should I remit the new lower amount? Will I need to do an amendment even though TT says not to amend as IRS will update Federal filings but I see nothing about the State filings?

Change in State taxes due

Currently, TurboTax has been updated to reflect the correct amount, and you do not need to amend the federal return, unless you have additional changes.  Since you did not file the state return yet, the current amount due is correct so you can file it and it will be transmitted.

The IRS will automatically adjust any filed returns.  They will send payments in two phases:

  • Phase 1: The IRS will adjust returns for taxpayers eligible for up to $10,200 exclusion. Payments for phase 1 are expected to start in May.
  • Phase 2: The IRS will adjust returns for those married filing jointly taxpayers who are eligible for the up to $20,400 exclusion and others with more complex returns. No specific timing has been given for phase 2 payments.
