Can't complete IL non-resident return.

I'm trying to finish Illinois non-resident tax return, but TurboTax keeps complaining "Complete your nonresident return(s) first". I repeated several times and answered the questions and even I could see the message like "Nice! Your Illinois return is in great shape". But Illinois return status is still "Started" unlike other states that I'm filing.

How can I check what the problem is?

Thanks in advance,

Try clearing your cache and cookies in your browser.

Your browser stores recently visited webpages as temporary files in a cache, which enables the pages to load more quickly when revisited.

However, a full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, so sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

Here are the official instructions for the most popular browsers:

Apple's official support site doesn't appear to contain instructions for clearing the cache in Safari. Your best bet is to search the Internet for clear Safari cache or similar search terms.

Cookies are small files that temporarily store data on your computer. We use them to personalize your experience so you see information you already entered and not items that are irrelevant or repetitive.

On rare occasions, they may make your browser think you already did something that you still need to do. To fix that, you'll need to delete (clear) the cookies from your browser.

Each browser has a slightly different method for deleting cookies. Choose the browser you're using:

Thank you for the suggestion.

I cleared all cache and cookies and revisited the state tax return.

Unfortunately, only the Illinois return is still in 'Started' state.

Based on the actions you've already taken, it sounds like your best bet would be to delete your Illinois return and start it over again.

See the TurboTax Help article How do I delete my state return in TurboTax Online? for guidance.

Yes, I already delete and re-start it a few times but no luck.

You are a resident of what state?  What is the nature of the income that you must report to Illinois as a nonresident?

I'm a resident of California and yes, I had an internship income at Illinois for 2.5months.

How was your internship income reported to you?  Did you enter it in your Federal return?

If you are a degree candidate, you could report it in the Education section, or if not, as Miscellaneous Taxable Income.

Your Federal entry should flow through into your Illinois return, where you can indicate what portion of the income belongs to IL.

Here's more info on Reporting Fellowship/Internship Income.

I have a W-2 for that internship and yes, I included it in my Federal return.

The Federal entry flowed through into my Illinois return automatically.

The problem is that TurboTax says "Started" for the Illinois return and complains that I need to finish it even though I went through the Illinois return several times.

I'm thinking of ignoring that warning and just filing it since I couldn't figure out what the problem is there - it might be a TurboTax bug somewhere.

Thanks,

A nonresident IL for one w2, should be easy. When you select state review, you should be able to go through the review and finish the return. If you have looked at your forms and see they are correct, you can file.

To see your forms:

  • In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.
  • For online:
    1. On the left side, select  Tax Tools
    2. Select Print center
    3. Select Print, save or preview this year's return
    4. If you have not paid, select pay now.

I'm having the same problem with the same state for a 1099 NEC and have done all of the above. I have no idea how to get past this.
