sahamanish,
Unfortunately, in your situation you do not get the SDI refunded through your CA income tax return. That mechanism is only for the case when multiple employers withheld more than the state's limit on SDI contributions. See https://www.ftb.ca.gov/refund/help-refund.html
Instead, your employer is the one who owes you the SDI and they, in turn, need to contact CA EDD and request a refund of the excess tax they paid. See https://edd.ca.gov/Payroll_Taxes/How_to_Correct_Prior_Reports_or_Deposits.htm for the instructions they should follow.
Good luck! You'll probably need it. With the pandemic, the EDD is overwhelmed.
Why should you get the CA SDI back? That's only if not have 2 or more employers. On your W2, what box is the SDI in? If it is in box 19 you need to move it to box 14 to get credit for it.
The SDI taxable wage limit is $118,371 per employee for calendar year 2019. The maximum to withhold for each employee is $1,183.71. If one employer took out more you have to get it back from the employer. So enter the max for box 14 on that W2.
Excess CA SDI will be on CA 540 line 74. See 540 Instructions Page 13 line 74
volvo girl,
Old posting that got revived, but the implication of the OP was that he wasn't working for a CA employer and should have had taxes from some other state withheld. I could be wrong.
