I am trying to e-file a California return with a form 593. Here is the error I receive:
What happened |
/CA-Return/CA-ReturnData/CAForm593/RemitterInformation/EntityInformation/Other - Data in the return is missing or invalid. Please double check your entries. For Form 593 withholding, for the withholding agent, either enter the individual information or the business information. Do not enter both. Additionally, the correct withholding agent ID number type (EIN, SSN, etc.) must be entered for either the individual or business. |
It is not very specific. I spent 1 hour on the phone with a turbotax software rep as we filled in the form the way turbotax wanted it and it was rejected. He then sent me to the tax department where I spent another hour and a half with a tax person trying to solve this and it was rejected 4 more times as we tried various options to get it to work. I e-filed last year and it was fine. I tried completing the form exactly as last year and it still would not work. It appears there may be a problem with this particular form. Has anyone found a workaround? I would rather not have to mail in the return. TT appears to be asking for me to put in information that is not required on the form, but I can't be certain and the TT help desk did not have an answer for me either.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
If you are online, go to tax tools>tools > share file with agent > 6 digit number pops up.
If on desktop, go to online >send tax file to agent > number pops.
Reply with # here and @AmyC please
978860 is the number I get. Thank you for taking a look at this.
In the CA, You have 3 form 593 in your tax return. All the addresses are 55 xxxxx xxxxx xx. I believe two are the same due to the installment amount. You also have 2 installment sale forms 3805E with the same dates for bought and sold so I feel like that is a duplicate.
This led me to the federal, I see two form 6252, Installment Sale Income forms that look identical.
The form 593 is not used if the withholding is already on a 1099 or k-1 entered in the federal section. On your 593:
The very top is missing the escrow or exchange number.
part I- individual is listed, not a business
part II - individual is listed
part III- nothing- perfect
part IV, the escrow/ exchange number is blank but filled in for part VII. The program makes up fake SSN so this is what I see:
part V shows
part VI- blank
part VII -looks good and shows amount withheld - 2 forms match the first and third.
Perjury statement is selected.
You need to delete the extra forms. Choose your method of deletion:
Once you have cleaned up the return and tried filing, if it fails again, reply with a new token number or contact support. Hopefully it will go through once you have things in order.
There are three form 593's because there were 3 principal payments on the loan. The numbers are the same, or similar, but the payment dates are different. Yes, we received 3 different 593 forms from the person paying the principal on the loan.
Withholding is not on a 1099 or k-1. We have done form 593 for several years without a problem in the past.
TT automatically fills in the taxpayer information (name and SS#) at the top of the pages. This is incorrect as the remitter is different from the taxpayer. This has been a problem in the past as well. I tried overriding the info, but was afraid that might be causing the reject problem. TT really needs to look at this form.
1. no escrow or exchange number as this was a private transaction where we did not even use a title or escrow company.
2. Part 1. It is between individuals, no business involved.
3. Part 4. No escrow number, just wrote in "none" for part 7 as something was required by TT.
4. We mailed in the form because everything I tried would not work.
Thank you for your help. I would appreciate it if you could let TT know someone really needs to look at this form. I have used TT for about 30 years now and I think this may cause me to try something else.
5. I tried competing the form exactly like we did last year when it went through fine and that did not work either.
