There are now 8 states that do not tax their residents’ income: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. If your state is not listed in the W2 box 15 drop down list it doesn’t have an income tax. Leave W2 boxes 15,16, & 17 BLANK, empty, no spaces.
Is this for your W-2? If yes, was any state tax withheld?
Normally if Box 16 and Box 17 are blank, no state is needed in Box 15
I have 2 states, the one I live in with no income tax, and one I worked in with an income tax. TurboTax wants me to select a state in the drop down box, but my state isn't listed because we don't have an income tax.
Since Tennessee does not have an income tax, Tennessee should not be listed on your W-2 Box 15.
Your W-2 might have the state you work in listed in Box 15 if that state does have an income tax.
If Box 15 lists the state in which you work, select that state from the drop-down.
You are not selecting the state you live in, you are entering the W-2 exactly the way it was reported to you.
On your REAL paper copy of your W-2, what is listed in Box 15, 16 and 17?
If Box 15 is blank, leave it blank as long as there was no state wages or state tax reported in box 16 or 17.
Box 15 has the two states listed and the employer's state ID number in them, Box 16 has the state wages for each state, and Box 17 has the state income tax, but only one amount because only one state has an income tax. TurboTax wants me to select the state for the line where I have an income but no income tax, so that state isn't in the drop down box.
There are 2 rows for 15-17. Just enter the boxes for the state you have info for. Don’t enter anything in 15-17 for the state that has no income tax.
