amending tax process

Hello So i’m 19 and i’ve been moved out of my parents house since last march and my dad had mistakenly claimed as a dependent on this years taxes. He plans on amending his taxes and taking me off so i can claim myself, i also know that i need to file a paper tax return and mail it in, but my question is will it take the normal time for me to receive my tax-check or will it take considerably longer because of the amendment process? I was also wondering if my dad had to pay any additional fees for filling an amendment in result of wrongfully claiming me. Thanks!

You are correct, you will have to print your return and mail it.  The IRS has a significant backlog of paper returns, so you can expect their to be a considerable delay in receiving whatever refund you are expecting.  It's hard to say exactly how long that delay will be.  You father will not incur a penalty for filing an amended return, but if he owes additional tax he will have to pay that.  If he files the amended return and pays any additional tax, there won't be any penalties.

You don't have to mail in your tax return. If you wait until the IRS accepts your father's amended tax return, you can e-file.

The IRS says it taxes up to 16 weeks to process an e-filed amended income tax return. You can e-file a tax return electronically through mid-October. The IRS just extended the regular filing deadline (no extension) to Monday May 17. You have time. It's up to you whether to mail it in or wait. The IRS will hold up your refund anyway until your dad amends his return.

Sorry Yes you have to print and mail your return.  Even if he amends it won't clear your ssn from the IRS database.  Once a ssn has been used you can't efile it again.
