I amended my 2022 return with a 1099 div that is tax-exempt federally but taxable in California. My California taxable income increased and I expected a smaller refund, but the amended return shows a greatly reduced refund. The federal refund amount shows $0 as expected since the amended return will only show the change. But I don't understand why my amended California return now shows a refund of only $156. If that is correct it would mean that the dividend was taxed at an extraordinarily high rate. The div I added was for $5951 and my original refund was $2597 but would be reduced to a refund of only $156 on the amended return! How can that be accurate? I will not submit the amended return until I have an explanation of why this refund amount was so drastically reduced.
