I am an active duty military member whom is stationed outside of Ohio but still claims residency in Ohio. Turbo Tax is giving me an error saying I am not allowed to claim my income because I indicated i am a non-resident of Ohio. I have checked all of my information over several times and cannot find where I would have indicated I am a non-resident as I have only indicated I am an Ohio resident. I have filed my taxes the same way every year on turbo tax and never had this issue before. I even tried to create a new profile and file it again thinking it might be a system error, but the same error pops up. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this error?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Please verify that you entered Ohio in the "My Info" section:
Then please follow these instructions to verify your residency with Ohio State:
Unfortunately, I can't say "thanks" because this does not fix the problem. Everything clearly says Ohio and yet the error keeps showing up. What do we do when all of our info accurately reflects Ohio residency and being a military member stationed in another state? I assume the problem is that the TurboTax Software has suddenly, this year ONLY, detected my out-of-state mailing address and automatically assumed I'm in Non-Resident status. I've never had that problem in the last 20 years (literally) of using TurboTax.
I apologize for my tone, I'm so incredibly frustrated.
Please do not enter any move-in move-out dates for the Ohio return.
Please do not enter any other states as other state you lived in. The return should be done as if you lived in Ohio the entire year. The mailing address you provide should have no bearing on your SLR.
Be sure you selected Active duty all year.
Kris,
Thank you for the follow-up. Unfortunately, I've already done all of those steps and it's still giving me the error. I haven't had this problem in the last 20 years of using TurboTax, for some reason something about this year is giving me the problem. Unfortunately, I called and spoke to a Tax advisor and she was very poorly misinformed on Tax law because she immediately told me I need to file non-resident Ohio state taxes and instead pay Hawaii state taxes (without realizing military members do not become state residents of the state where they are assigned). Unfortunately, at this point I think I'm just going to have to start using other Tax software or go to one of the large physical chain tax companies. This is not worth the headache for trying to deal with on my own.

I have followed the above procedures, and/or guidance multiple times over, and no where am I marked as a "non-resident."
I have ran a search and I have found multiple Active Duty Military who are running into the same issue. I have used Turbo Tax since 2003, and I have not had issue the last few years since OH implemented the refund for Active Duty residents.
So, all that to ask, is Intuit aware of this known issue? And when will the update to fix this issue be implemented? A response would be appreciated, and if there is somewhere else to escalate this to have it resolved that information would be ideal. Thank you, and I look forward to your swift reply.

Having issue filing Ohio return. We keep getting an error message stating that we are unable to claim active duty income because we are claiming nonresidency as active duty when that is false. It is clearly checked "resident" and "full-time" on all of the forms. I have filed every year for over ten years now with Turbo Tax and have never had any issues. This isn't user error. This is something within the system. Is there any idea on when this will be fixed?
@ynvmeimonly_18 I have had the same issue and I am waiting on a response in this thread. If you search "Ohio Military" under topics while signed into Turbo Tax you can find another response that says they're waiting on an update, and can sign up for a notification.
I posted here to hopefully pull some information of when that update may be. I have also been using Turbo Tax for a similar length of time and have had no issue until this cycle (I use it especially in these moments when I am stationed overseas.)
This is the title below:
Error: "Schedule A: Line 26 Military pay received by OH residents should be blank"
I am having the same exact issue. I think it is a glitch in turbotax.
@yukidaruma33 , @ynvmeimonly_18 , @Jeredharris,
I'm going to attempt the to delete the form and restart my OH return via the instructions on this thread "Schedule A: Line 26 Error For State Taxes" and then I'll bring back my findings.
(There are multiple Intuit employees reporting different ways to attempt to get around this, but in the end my thinking is like Jered, and this is an error/glitch in their program.)
So it is a software glitch. I was on the phone for over an hour with them trying to fix it by changing things around. I just decided to efile everything but my Ohio return. Those will have to be mailed in. I also had to change the deposit type from direct to paper check but this was only for the Ohio state return. Everything else was kept efile and direct deposit. I don't know if thats a possibility for those deployed but I hope it helps.
@ynvmeimonly_18, thank you... this is disheartening. I'll wait a week and see if I can shake things up. If not then I'll print and file. Booooooooo...
For those interested, I tried to go in and delete the individual forms and then restart my taxes but it did not help the issue. It's also infuriating that there is a topic here in the community that there is a known issue for Ohio state members and yet there is no answer or estimated fix window. On top of that, every time a Tax Expert answers they always start off by asking you to go check your "My Info" for accuracy, indicating they didn't read your post in the first place.
First sign out of TurboTax and clear browsing history for your browser. Sign back in and I realize it's been said many times, but do check all personal info sections for accuracy and also verify in the follow on questions when entering your military W2 that "Active Duty Military Pay" is checked. Then for those using a desktop version follow these steps as a workaround.
1. Click "Forms" at top right of page
2. Find "OH Schedule A" in the your list of forms on the left hand side
3. If not there, click "Open Form" and the OH drop down
4. Click the IT 1040 drop down
5. Locate the Schedule A and click to open it
6. Go to line 26 and enter the military pay that was earned as an OH resident while stationed outside of OH
You can then go back to "Step-by-Step" and go through the OH interview; you should see the deduction now at the top of your OH summary page.
For the online versions, the updates should now give you the option in the OH interview to enter the military pay that should be excluded.
